Rowdies sign forward Alex Morrell
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Rowdies have signed forward Alex Morrell, the team announced Thursday.
Morrell, 22, a Lakeland native, played for the Chicago Fire and Saint Louis FC last season and will wear the No. 9 jersey.
“We’re excited to sign a young player of Alex’s quality,” Rowdies coach Stuart Campbell said. “He spent last year in MLS learning from experienced coaches and players and now he’s ready to make the next step. We look forward to seeing him develop and make an impact here with the Rowdies.”
Morrell played for St. Petersburg’s Strictly Soccer, then the University of North Florida Ospreys from 2012 to 2015, scoring 10 goals in 63 games.
Morrell, selected 22nd overall in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft, made four appearances (56 minutes) for Chicago, and two games on loan to Saint Louis in August.
The Rowdies open preseason play against Germany’s VfL Wolfsburg in the Florida Cup Jan. 8.
