Orlando City sends Shea to Vancouver for Giles Barnes
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Brek Shea, one of Orlando City SC’s original signings in 2014, has been traded to the Vancouver Whitecaps in exchange for Jamaican forward Giles Barnes, the team announced Saturday.
Shea, 26, played mostly at left back in 2015 and moved to left midfield last season. Shea, who has made 34 appearances for the U.S. national team, totaled three goals in 46 appearances (39 starts) for Orlando City.
Barnes holds a U.S. green card and qualifies as a domestic player.
“We’re thrilled to boost our attack with a player like Giles,” Orlando City general manager Niki Budalic said. “His versatility to score and create goals will be a valuable asset this season. I’d like to thank Brek for his exemplary professionalism during his time with our club.”
Barnes, 28, who can play forward or attacking midfield, has 33 goals and 15 assists in 131 regular-season and post-season appearances (120 starts) since joining MLS in 2012. Barnes, whose grandparents are Jamaican, has totaled three goals in 18 appearances for the Jamaican national team.
