Armada fires past Flagler College in preseason opener
The Jacksonville Armada FC kicked off the preseason with a 5-0 win over Flagler College Saturday.
Coach Mark Lowry split the squad into two lineups for two 35-minute halves. Trinidad and Tobago striker Jonathan Glenn (ninth minute), right back Drew Beckie (14th) and attacking midfielder J.C. Banks (19th), all new signings, gave the Armada a 3-0 halftime lead.
Jemal Johnson’s penalty kick (63rd) and center back Michael O’Sullivan’s header in the closing seconds concluded the scoring.
“Glenn is an absolute beast,” Lowry said. “He’s a handful for defenders. That’s the kind of forward we’ve needed, someone who will put his head in there. You saw his goal — a rebound inside the six-yard box — and we didn’t score those goals last season. With Glenn you get a true number nine.
“Drew Beckie is a great footballer, a top pro. He’s been in the league a long time and played at a high level. We identified him early on as a player we wanted to come in. We saw his quality today, and he’s only going to get better.”
