Armada sign Canadian Drew Beckie, O'Sullivan
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Armada FC have signed defenders Drew Beckie and Michael O’Sullivan, the team announced Tuesday.
“I want to welcome Drew and Michael in to the Armada family, these moves strengthen our identity,” Armada technical director Nathan Walter said. “Drew has lots of experience within the NASL and has shown he can play multiple positions, while keeping a very high level of consistency to his game. Michael is a strong, powerful defender who will blossom under the direction of Mark.”
Beckie, 26, who played for Canada's U-23 national team, grew up in Highlands Ranch, Colo. Last season, Beckie made 23 apperances (19 starts) for the Carolina RailHawks. Beckie played 35 games (27 starts) with the Ottawa Fury in 2014 and ‘15. In 2015, Beckie received the NASL Humanitarian of the Year award for working with Walking In Grief's Shadow (WINGS), a program that helps children dealing with the loss of a parent.
“Drew is the total package,” Armada coach Mark Lowry said. “He is a player who will suit our style of play perfectly, a great athlete who possesses impressive technique and composure on the ball. Off the field, we have added a man of great character and another leader in the locker room.”
Beckie, selected 28th overall by the Columbus Crew in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft after playing for the University of Denver Pioneers, spent the 2013 season on the Crew’s reserve squad.
O’Sullivan, 21, a center back, graduated from Palm Beach Atlantic University and played for the Orlando City Development Academy.
“Michael is a young center back who we have great belief in,” Lowry said. “He has the tools and attitude to go far in the game and we are proud to give him that opportunity.”
